Hello there everyone!
For this week's blog I am going to be focusing on what I read in chapter two of the book, Steal Like An Artist, byAustin Kleon. After reading chapter two, there really was a lot that stuck with me and made sense.
As a human, it always takes awhile to figure out who you are as a person, you never come into the world knowing. On page 33 it explains how we can learn who we are by "copying". Of course we are only going to copy those who inspire us most, but by copying, we can learn to create our "own" by using the wisdom we have collected through our experiences of copying. This was a idea that I really took note of when reading the chapter.
On page 36 of the book, the author states, "Don't just steal the style, steal the thinking behind the style." I found this extremely important because its telling you to find out why artists did what they did in their work. It is hard to "copy" something if you don't know why it was created that way in the first place. Any artist can do this by climbing their "family tree" and studying their thinker's work (and why they did what they did).
The act of copying is known as imitating. It is important to eventually start emulating your own work after so long of imitating. What is the difference between imitating and emulating you ask? Imitating obviously means to copy, like stated previously. Emulating is the act of going father than imitation and applying your own spin, twist, and ideas to make the work your own.
Steal Like An Artist chart
The chart above is from Kleon's book. I found this chart extremely useful because it helps guide me to be able emulate other artists' work. All of the things listed on the left are good things to keep in mind when emulating styles and guides you to actually be able to learn why the artist did what they did. The right hand side lists all the things you want to stay away from when copying other artists ideas.
My chosen thinker (stated in previous blogs) is Chuck Anderson. The left hand photo is Chuck's and the right is my rough emulation of his idea. It still needs some work, but I have the concept down. I used my own photographs.
This concludes this weeks topics being covered, I hope some of these ideas got your creative mind thinking. Thanks for listening to me ramble on :)
Its been real,
Lindsey
