Hello again!
For my blog this week I am going to be looking deeper into chapter one of the marvelous book I was talking about last week, Steal Like An Artist.
In the chapter on page eleven, the author states we are all "mashups' of what we choose to let in our lives and that we are a "sum" of our influences. I found it something very important and I sticky noted it the first time I read the chapter. When it comes to letting influences in my life, I love to surround myself around any forms of art.
I have been to a couple different museums like the Art Institute of Chicago and the very famous Louvre in Paris, France. So, I am a huge fan of different mediums like paintings, drawings, ceramics, and any sculpture made out of anything. Art classes are what really let me use my creativity and realize I really enjoy using it.
I also really enjoy music (who doesn't?), so many different kinds; it mainly depends on mood and what I am feeling at the time. I like to listen to it always on my way to school and when I work on school work/non school related tasks, like cleaning.
I feel like the people you surround yourself with are really a huge influence, and it is really important to be careful of who you let into you life. Only a few of my friends are people who I have know most of my life, two to be exact. It is true that people usually grow apart, but I have found that there are only some people you will grow really close with and keep those people for awhile; it takes time to find those people.
All of the good friends I have, we all really try to push each other to go after our dreams. I have always felt that is what they're suppose to do, even if your not going down the same career paths. Since my friends are supportive, I always show my friends my projects that are in the works and get feedback even though they aren't design savvy (because most consumers aren't going to always be design savvy).
I also have an extremely supportive boyfriend I have lived with since I was out of high school and his family (who I am very close with and treat like my own) are very supportive as well.
I have really pushed myself to open up my circle more and meet as many people as I can. I feel it is important to network and get connected, but this is when you really need to pay attention to what you let influence you.
When it comes to people, I always make time for family. Family has always been extremely important to me because they have always given me the support I need to grow and go after my dreams. I love to catch them up on my all of my gained knowledge I have gained since starting this career path.
I have been fortunate enough to have grandparents who have taken me on many travels. Traveling has really contributed to my hunger for knowledge and it is also a source to my inspiration. I really appreciate getting those opportunities growing up.
All of these influences have helped lead me to where I feel I belong and have encouraged me to keep going farther in some way, so I am quite satisfied with being blessed enough to be influenced by them. All of my influences I have found important enough to let influence me and shape who I am.
Even though most of my influences are close to home, I do open my self up to gaining new ones because there are never enough. I do this by meeting new people, going to recreational activities, continuing to travel, and also doing random browsing online. I also do this by following another one of Kleon's suggestions in the book, and that is to climb your family tree.
Recently, I have picked decided to pick Chuck Anderson as the start of my climb. I love Chuck's work and have started surrounding myself with it by following him on social media/subscribing to updates on his portfolio page for his studio.
After looking as every link in the nav bar of the page, I took special note of "THE BRILLIANCE!" link. The link leads to a page that is in my case extremely helpful because it talks about who No Pattern studio (and others) find interesting/inspiring; I found it very interesting as well!
Not to far down into their posts, I found one labeled, "Visualized! #2: Artists to know." (feel free to click on it and read yourself!).
The entry is written by Chuck himself and included two of the "thinkers" intend on learning more about. Those are Pat Perry and GMUNK (Photography). Pat is a illustrator from Michigan who Chuck mentored when he was still learning the ropes, but he has really succeeded and become one who inspires Chuck. GMUNK (Bradley Munkowitz) is really know in the motion and graphic design community and just recently launched a photography portfolio as well. Both of the artists are extremely talented and work following. I still have one more thinker to find from Chuck Anderson, and I plan to do this because I already like where this tree is taking me.
This concludes this week's blog post, hopefully it was as painless as it was for me to create it!
Its been real,
Lindsey :)
